A few months ago, I decided to organize my first extended family photoshoot. I realized that a lot of the people I love and care about are aging and that there have been a few additions to the family (aka lots of babies!). So, I called for an extended family shoot, and the only thing I regretted? not doing it sooner. I now plan on doing it every few years. These are memories I want to look back on to see all the family members I love- my grandparents, my aunts and uncles, my nieces and nephews. Photos that our future generation will cherish too!
The first thing I did was contact everybody to get them on board, and pick a date for the shoot. Once we agreed on a day, I picked a location that was convenient for everyone. I then sent a dressing code so we could all be on the same page. Complementing each other but not matching. Here’s a blog about what to wear to your photoshoot.
Of course, once we arrived there were some people that were late- that is inevitable in a big group. So, we started taking photos of the different family combinations that were there and as they arrived. Once everyone was there, we took the big family shot with everyone in it. We took the kids’ photos first, and let them go play for the rest of the shoot. By the way, I also brought a list of all the combinations I wanted. This saved so much time and ensured no one was missed.
Doing this extended family shoot was such a great idea, we all got to bond. Most of the family got to take photos with each other that they would never otherwise have. It’s so special to me that a photo of my daughter with her grand grandpa exists!
This is your sign that you should get an extended family session!
