This was a sweet Delray cake smash session for Penelope, I loved the momma’s vision: clean, bright and simple! We had such a blast!
You’ve been documenting your baby’s milestone photos all year, and now is time to to document the Big One! How better to celebrate it than with a cake smash photoshoot? This delightful trend captures the pure joy and curiosity of your little one diving into a cake, making for adorable and memorable photos. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you plan the perfect cake smash photoshoot.
Selecting a theme can add a cohesive and charming touch to your photoshoot. Whether it’s a favorite storybook, a seasonal motif, or just a color scheme, a theme can make the photos more visually appealing. Popular themes include:
The outfit should complement the theme and be comfortable for your baby. Some parents opt for just a diaper cover, while others prefer a cute dress or romper.
The cake is the star of the show! Choose a cake that is not only beautiful but also baby-friendly. Opt for a small, soft cake with colors that match your theme. Avoid fondant, as it can be tough for babies to smash and eat. Simple buttercream cakes with light, fluffy frosting work best. Adrienne Grand makes delicious and super cute cakes.
The backdrop should enhance the theme without overwhelming the baby or the cake. Balloons, props or simply the outdoors that match your chosen theme can add an extra touch of whimsy.
Schedule the photoshoot around your baby’s happiest time of day, usually after a nap and a feeding. A well-rested and content baby will be more likely to enjoy the session and give you those precious smiles. This is where a natural light studio works wonders, because you can chose the time when baby will be happiest. While an outdoor shoot should ideally be schedule half an hour before sunrise or an hour after sunset. Plus, indoors will be more comfortable for baby during the FL hot summer months. I would only recommend outdoors during the cooler FL winter months.
Cake smashes are messy by nature! Have wipes, towels, and a change of clothes ready for both your baby and yourself.
When I’m photographing a cake smash session I like to focus on capturing the tiny details – little hands covered in frosting, the curiosity in your baby’s eyes, and the inevitable mess. These close-up shots add depth and emotion to the overall story of the photoshoot.
I like to Keep the atmosphere light and fun. I’ll ask you for songs your baby loves and I’ll play some to keep them entertained and happy. Your positive energy will help your baby feel more comfortable and playful during the shoot.
Once the cake smash is over, a warm bath is usually in order. Consider making a short video of the bath time to add to the memories of the day. I offer heirloom prints, albums to give your precious One Year Old memories a permanent, palpable home.
A cake smash photoshoot is a joyful celebration of your baby’s first year and a wonderful way to create lasting memories. With careful planning and a touch of creativity, you can ensure that this sweet moment is beautifully captured. Happy planning, and enjoy the smash!
