This Miami family session with the The Flores’ was so sweet! When we drove down to this gorgeous natural light studio in Redland FL it started to pour! Thankfully, by the time we arrived the rain had mostly subsided but it was still drizzling, so we began our shoot inside the house. Once the rain had completely stopped we went outside for some photos in the garden. And look just how cute they came out!
When a family books me to capture them, one of my first questions is: where’d you like to go? Some people have a location but most people have no idea. That is totally fine! I start by getting an idea of the vision the client has for the session, the vibe, the aesthetic they desire. Based on that information I send over a few spots to choose from. See, the location of your choice will determine what you’ll wear, the time we will meet (because some locations re best during sunrise, and some are best during sunset). Here’s a few things to help you choose a session location that best suits you and your family.
Start by thinking about your family’s unique personality and interests. Are you an outdoorsy family who loves nature, or do you prefer the urban charm of a cityscape? Choosing a location that reflects your family’s character will make the photos more authentic and meaningful. Here are some ideas based on different interests:
Consider locations that hold sentimental value or tell a story about your family. This could be a place where you spend a lot of time together or where significant events have occurred. Incorporating meaningful locations adds a personal touch to your photos and makes them more special. For example:
The time of year plays a significant role in determining the best location for your family session. Different seasons offer unique opportunities and backdrops for your photos:
Good lighting is essential for beautiful photos. Natural light is usually the most flattering, so consider locations that offer ample natural light. Early morning or late afternoon (the golden hour) provides the best lighting conditions for outdoor sessions. If you’re shooting indoors, choose a location with large windows and plenty of natural light.
Some locations may require permits or have associated fees for professional photography sessions. I usually know about these for most places in my area and will notify you. But if it’s a special place you picked, always check with the location beforehand to ensure you have the necessary permissions and to avoid any unexpected surprises on the day of your shoot.
